WORK STOPS ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, JULY 12–13!
Everyone join the 24-HOUR STRIKE on MONDAY, JULY 14
Gathering on the day of the strike at 10:00 AM at the TERNA construction site at the Hard Rock IRC project. At 12:00 PM the trade union will meet with the employers at the Lamda offices.
Colleagues,
Today, Friday, July 11, at the TERNA construction site at the Hard Rock IRC project, three workers were injured when scaffolding collapsed on them—one of them seriously. All three were transported to the hospital by ambulance. We wish our colleagues a swift and full recovery.
This is yet another in a long list of occupational “accidents” on this project—another incident that highlights how our worksites have become modern-day sweatshops. Health and safety protocols are seen by employers as mere expenses, and they do not hesitate to endanger our lives to cut costs. In this particular case, essential safety measures were ignored to accelerate the construction pace. Specifically, an entire scaffold was moved by crane without the required precautions. As soon as the police arrived on site, company management was nowhere to be found.
To return home safely, employers must be forced to put lives before profits. The root causes of workplace accidents are the intensification of work and the absence of proper safety measures. It is well known that contractors routinely demand 60-hour workweeks across six or even seven days. There is also growing pressure to work Sundays to meet tight deadlines. This labor-intensive pace has significantly increased the number of daily minor injuries—and with them, the risk of serious accidents.
At the same time, the government maintains a regime where inspections of companies by the Labour Inspectorate regarding the enforcement of safety measures remain insufficient. The new legislation allowing 13-hour workdays will only make matters worse.
In response to these unacceptable conditions, we are calling a STRIKE.
We demand:
FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF ALL HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURES TO PREVENT OCCUPATIONAL ACCIDENTS AND DISEASES
EFFECTIVE INSPECTIONS AND ENFORCEMENT BY THE LABOUR INSPECTORATE IN EVERY COMPANY ON THE PROJECT
CERTIFIED SCAFFOLDING AND MACHINERY — PROPERLY MAINTAINED AND USED IN COMPLIANCE WITH SAFETY STANDARDS
COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING FOR ALL PERSONNEL
IMPLEMENTATION OF OUR FEDERATION’S COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT — INCLUDING STRICT WORKING HOURS AND A FIVE-DAY WORKWEEK FOR ALL CONTRACTORS
ON-SITE MEDICAL UNIT AND AMBULANCE SERVICES — STAFFED BY QUALIFIED MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS
PROVISION OF PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) — FREE OF CHARGE AND FULLY COMPLIANT WITH SAFETY STANDARDS
Our lives are not expendable. Safety is not optional. We will not stand by while profit is prioritized over human life
